Mixed Messages

This morning as I got to work and passed by the stack of newspapers for guests, I seen a story and picture with cattle. This sparked my interest especially with the story being on the front page of the Edmonton Journal.

The story was about a woman who was attacked by a cow who had recently calved. She was badly hurt, and she says that if it was not from her dogs chasing the cow away, she would have been dead.

I really have mixed feelings about this story. Yes it is a feel good story about how animals save humans, and it talks about our health care system, and what a great job they did. However, it also shows cattle in a very negative light without more explanation of the situation.

We have to remember that cattle are animals. They have animal instincts and will act of those. This animal instinct is at an all time high after a mother calves. As kids growing up we were always told not to trust a cow who had calved, even if she was our favorite show cow.

I just hope that people remember that as they read this story today.

Maybe you should write a letter to the editor. You have a really good point.

I was thinking the exact same thing as Crystal! Frustrating - however reporters are always looking for stories and as Urbanites - they don't know any better. I hope you can share the story of Agriculture with this individual - heck the whole team of staff Stacy. Good luck
