Two Great Teams

Last night my friend Shaun and I headed out to the hockey game in Edmonton. I am a true hockey fan. I can compete with lots of guys as far as stats, and team info. I can tell you who is leading in the standings, leading in the points division, and who is sitting in 3rd place in the rookie scoring this year (Yes, it is Edmonton Oiler, 1st overall pick Taylor Hall!)

I especially wanted to go to the game last night as it was my 2 favorite teams playing. Obviously the Edmonton Oilers were the home team, and although they are not having a great season, it is still exciting to watch them play as they get their new young team going. The visitors last night were the Chicago Blackhawks, and current Stanley Cup Champions.

Now it was not the cup win last year of the Blackhawks made me a fan. In fact since about grade 2 I have been a Chicago fan. I was home alone with my sister one day, and the phone rang. We were taught from a young age how to take a proper message and to answer the phone even if our parents were out of the house. This particular call was from a man in Chigaco named Brent, and he wanted to talk to my dad about buying some Angus cows. I took the message just as I had been taught and told the man my dad would call him back that evening.

Later that evening when my dad got home, I gave him the message and my dad started to laugh. He asked me if I knew who this Brent man was. I replied no, why would I know of anyone who lived in Chicago? As it turned out that man was actually Brent Sutter, and he was playing for the Chicago Blackhawks! I was so excited that I had talked to a real NHL player that instantly I became a huge fan (behind the Oilers of course!). I went to school the next day and bragged to all the kids in my class. That Christmas I got a Brent Sutter hockey card, and I still have it to this day.

About 15 years later, I had another run in with the Blackhawks. I was staying at the Westin Hotel in Calgary doing a site tour for work. I noticed a lot of guys walking around the hotel that looked very familiar. I asked my hotel contact if they had lots of sports teams that stayed there, and if the Chicago Blackhawks were there at that time? She confirmed that yes the team was in house. Later that evening we were in the lounge having some drinks, as were some of the player. Long story short we ended up having drinks with a couple of the players, names I will keep to myself, but it was a really fun night to get to hear all about their life on the road!

I will forever be an Oilers fan, but the Blackhawks will have a soft spot in my heart as well.

What to Wear: Valentine's Day with the Girls

Valentine's Day is one of those holidays you either love or hate. When you are in a relationship you love it, and when you are single it is a day that women hate!

This year if you are single, or your man is out of town, why not celebrate anyways! There is no reason that you cannot still go and have fun just like everyone else.

For this look, we went for a mix of comfortable, but still looking great. You never know when you will run into Mr Right!

Calving 2011

I love calving time at the farm. It is always exciting to see what the new calf crop will look like, what new sires worked, and start dreaming of what might make the show team.

This year we have had a really cold winter. There has been a couple of weeks already that have been -30C plus a wind on top of that. It is really hard for these little calves when it gets that cold. Sometimes they end up looking like this...

This little guy has some frozen ears.
We finally got some Revolution bull calves this year after having none all of last year. There is some excitement in the air about these calves are they are coming along really great!

This is a Revolution bull out of our Robb cow

We often get asked if we have any black/red ones. Our herd is about 50/50 on black and reds. The black calves always look so shiny and cute when they are born.

This year we used some sexed female semen to try and get heifers. People will do this for a few different reasons. It allows you to use a bull that is 7/8 (not purebred for a Simmental) and get a heifer. The heifer would then be purebred. There are also some bulls that produce better heifer offspring then bulls.

Got to love the attitude some of these calves have!
Once and a while we will lose a calf. Sometimes this will be because of sickness, or there was just something wrong with the calf to begin with. This year I had a young cow lose a set of twins at birth. We decided to get a calf to graft onto her, and let her raise it for the year.

This calf kinda sticks out around our place... She was a bottle baby for a week until we got her, so she is nice and friendly!

It is officially that time of year. The mailbox becomes filled with bull sale catalogues and there is always another 2 or 3 online a day.

I love this time of year, as it gives your some really good reading material on those snowy days inside. This past weekend at the farm we pictured our bulls. We have already sold 3 bulls off the farm this year, and these are the others that will be going to the Red Deer Bull Sale.

Rumor Hotel

I am not sure where I came across this the other day, but I fell in love.

This hotel room is stunning, and EXACTLY what I want my room to look like. You can even ask my family, and roommates about the start of my room looking like this. I have the black and white, with purple accents started.

If I was able to change the carpet, or paint, this is what it would end up looking like.
This is another awesome room too! Jut with red accents instead of purple and blue.

The Rumor Hotel is found just off the strip in Vegas. You can see more pictures and information on the hotel here.

What to Wear: First Date

The next step in What to Wear is the classic first date. You are excited, nervous, spend days trying to find just the right look. I have put a few tips below as well as an outfit that I definetly would be seen in.

First Date Dressing Tips
  • Don't buy a new outfit. 1. How do you know he is worth it yet
  • You feel more comfortable in your old favorite clothes. Another reason not to buy a new outfit
  • Dress practical. You dont always know what you will be doing. A mini skirt may be cute, but at the bowling ally not that practical...
  • Keep away from bold colors. He should be paying attention to you not your shirt
  • Not show everything on the first date. A body skimming shirt would be great, but don't show all of the girls off the bat.
What to Wear: First Date

I love this outfit for a few reasons. It is practical, low key, but dressy enough for a few different situations. It would look great for a casual dinner, drinks, a movie, or even bowling...

Purse- Mulberry Postman's Lock All In One clutch
Shoes- Alexander McQueen Beige Leather Peep Toe Ankle Boots
Jeans- Miss Me Disc Boot Stretch Jean
Jacket- Caledonian Jacket
Shirt- Wearhouse Cowl Neck Shirt

Ask Stacy Part 1

I have often been asked exactly how many scarves I own. I wear one pretty much everyday, and am constantly buying more. I am to the point now where I am getting multiple of the same color!

The other weekend I found a new spot for my scarves. It is easy to sort through them now, the only problem is that I am going to either have to stop buying them, or find another spot as these drawers are right full!

The zebra one in the back corner is one of my favorites. And yes there are 3 white ones. One is new, it was a Christmas gift, and the cream one was also a gift from Australia. There are a couple black ones as well...

The black and plaid one in the bottom corner is another favorite of mine. The most expensive one... would be the real Burrberry one in the top right corner. That baby set me back a few hundred dollars, but boy do I love it!
