Earlier this week I mentioned that "the Eng" and I went and got lost in the Edmonton Corn Maze, we had a great time, but before that we headed to William Hawrelak Park for a surprise picnic.
I love Hawrelak Park. It is always so peaceful and quiet, which is a nice break from the city.
The lake is really pretty and a great place to go skating in the winter, or paddle boating in the summer. This trip though we went for a picnic!
Nothing better then a few sandwiches, veggies, cookies and a beer on a hot summer day in the park!

Edmonton Corn Maze
Last weekend "the Eng" and I headed out to the Edmonton Corn Maze for some fun. I had been to the Corn Maze at Lacombe before, but never to the Edmonton one.
There is so much to do at the Edmonton Maze. There is a little petting zoo, peddle bike races, a large pillow bouncer and of course popcorn!
It took us about 2 hrs to go through the maze and complete all 10 check points.
Corn in Alberta is not a very popular crop to grow. Our growing season is more suited towards canola, wheat, barley and oats. Most of the corn that is grown in central Alberta will be used for animal feed rather then human consumption. The exception is in southern Alberta where you can find the Taber corn!
Our corn does not grow to be as tall or the stalk as thick as it does other places. Crystal has been doing a Corn Report, and this is what the corn looked like on the same weekend in Iowa.

Farming- Part 4
It has been a bit since I have done a crop update post, mainly because the rain never seems to stop for the crops to grow!
This was the last picture of the 2 fields that I had taken. These are from the end of June after a rainstorm.
Now the fields have really started to fill out and grow. The one field is canola, the one with the bright yellow flowers, and the other is a crop of barley.
I have always loved the bright yellow crop. Canola crops are used for the seed that they produce to make canola oil!
The barley crop is coming in real nice as well. Barley is a feed used mainly for cattle feed, and also for beer!

Summer Flowers
Hope you are all having a great week. The weather here has been kinda cold and rainy for a few days. I thought I would attempt to brighten your day with some beautiful summer flowers from our backyard!
Hope the rest of your week goes great! I have a bunch of exciting news to share, including an upcoming trip that I am really looking forward too!

Summer on the Farm
One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to walk through the cows out on pasture. Over the last couple of weeks we have been taking cows to summer pasture where they will stay until September or October.
Our cattle are very quiet as most are old show cattle, or have at least been tie broke during their life. This makes it easy to walk through them, be able to scratch a few old friends, and just enjoy the site of cow/calf pairs.
Each year we keep a few pairs at home to eat the grass there. The ones that stay are usually a few that we are going to show or sell throughout the year. It also means that the better cows get to stay home so that visitors have something to look at when they stop.
If you are in the area, feel free to stop in any time to see the cattle at home, or a tour of the rest of the herd. Most of the cows are within 10 mins of the home place, so they are always a short drive away!

Golf Courses
One of my favorite summer activities is golfing. It started about 3 years ago, and I have been hooked ever since. After my first round I went and bought my own clubs and have never looked back.
Not a lot of my friends golf, so it started out going with the family on the weekends. Now it has turned into a weekly thing for me to do, and there is nothing better then hitting the course or the driving range after a long day at work, or on a relaxing weekend.
One of my other favorite things about golfing is just getting out and enjoying the course. Golf courses are really beautiful, and this year I have been able to play 4 new courses, and have enjoyed each one of them.

Way to Go Boys!
Well we knew it was all going to happen, and as of last night it became official.
For the first time in the Edmonton Oiler's history we will have the #1 pick in the NHL entry draft. After an embarrassing season we hoped this would happen. At least something would be salvaged out of the year.
There will be much debate between now and the draft over who the Oilers should take. And please god do not let them trade it away!!
The team needs to do a lot of rebuilding this year. We have a lot of old veterans that need to be moved to another team, and hopefully during the summer we can pick up some great players of high draft picks.
So here is to finishing the season in last place Edmonton! I guess there is no where to go but up next year... and hey at least we are not like Calgary. They too are going to miss the playoffs, but at least something good comes out of us missing them!
